What Is Refractive Surgery?

LASIK at Juliette Eye Institute is a seamless, virtually painless, blade-free procedure that utilizes the most advanced laser technologies to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.

Dr. Melendez first creates a tiny flap in the surface of your cornea by using a laser to form microscopic bubbles just under the surface. He then gently lifts the flap where the tissue has separated to gain access to the tissue below.

Our state-of-the-art excimer surgical lasers with eye-tracking technology are then utilized to help Dr. Melendez accurately reshape the cornea to correct your vision while using iris mapping to guide the lasers for customized precision.

Once the procedure is complete, Dr. Melendez will reposition the flap, which immediately starts to heal in place. The whole procedure for two eyes takes under 15 minutes of time. It’s that fast!

What Are The Benefits Of LASIK Eye Surgery?

For patients with nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism, LASIK surgery can improve vision and reduce or eliminate the need for corrective eyewear. LASIK is a process of reshaping the cornea with an excimer laser to correct refractive errors.

Choosing an experienced and reputable ophthalmologist is the surest way to experience the maximum benefits of LASIK. The main benefit of LASIK laser vision correction surgery is that it can reduce or eliminate a patient’s dependence on glasses and contact lenses.

These changes are often dramatic and immediate and can lead to many other exciting advantages. Crisp vision could lead to a wider range of leisure activities or even open up new career opportunities. The effects of your LASIK procedure can allow you to achieve a clearer vision for years to come.

Results From LASIK Eye Surgery

For most patients, LASIK offers remarkable results. While it can take several months for vision to stabilize after surgery, you have a good chance of achieving 20/20 vision or better. As a result, patients are far less dependent on glasses or contacts, rarely requiring corrective eyewear for daily activities. LASIK results have been shown to last at least ten years or more.

The pre-surgery status of your vision is a significant indicator of where you will end up after LASIK surgery. The type and degree of visual error a patient suffers from can greatly affect their results. Generally, those with only a low degree of nearsightedness report the best LASIK results.

Patients with farsightedness, astigmatisms, or a high degree of nearsightedness experience improvement in vision, however, their results are often less predictable. After undergoing LASIK surgery, most patients report a significant improvement in vision.

Patients are substantially less dependent on glasses and contacts for daily activities, including reading and driving. Furthermore, these results have a high rate of lasting for the long term with low rates of complications. During your initial consultation, Dr. Melendez will thoroughly review your eye and overall health to ensure that you understand how the surgery can benefit your unique needs.

LASIK FAQs

LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) is a vision correction procedure that uses a laser to reshape the cornea, improving how light is focused on the retina. It treats nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.

Candidates must be at least 18 years old, have stable vision for at least a year, and be in good general eye health. An eye evaluation can confirm if LASIK is the right choice for you.

The procedure itself is virtually painless. Numbing eye drops are used to ensure comfort. You may experience mild discomfort or dryness afterward, which typically resolves quickly.

The surgery itself takes about 5 minutes for both eyes. The laser reshaping process only lasts a few seconds to minutes per eye.

Most patients notice improved vision within 24 hours. Full healing and stabilization of vision can take several weeks. Avoid rubbing your eyes or strenuous activities during the recovery period.

While LASIK is considered safe, potential risks include dry eyes, glare, halos, or temporary fluctuations in vision. Serious complications are rare and can often be managed with follow-up care.

Many patients achieve 20/20 vision or better after LASIK. However, some may still need glasses for specific tasks, such as reading or night driving, particularly as they age (due to presbyopia).

For most patients, the effects of LASIK are long-lasting. However, natural changes in the eyes, such as presbyopia or cataracts, can affect vision over time and may require additional treatment.

The cost varies depending on the technology used and the surgeon’s expertise. LASIK is often considered an investment in your long-term vision, and financing options may be available to make it more accessible.

You’ll need to stop wearing contact lenses for a period before surgery, avoid makeup or lotions around the eyes on the day of the procedure, and arrange for transportation home afterward. Dr. Melendez will provide detailed pre-op instructions.
